Samaritans Purse
Operation Christmas Child
Kickoff on Sunday, October 9
Pack a shoe
box for a child and share the love of Jesus. Samaritan's Purse,
headed by Franklin Graham, will deliver the gift boxes and a story
book explaining salvation to 108 countries, including Haiti.
This is a powerful way for your entire family to participate in
evangelism. Boxes and instructions will be available
on the back table on Sunday mornings and in the Church/School office
during the week.
Operation Christmas Child Shares Joy and Hope
The sprawling
Kibera slum outside Nairobi, Kenya, is a place of crushing poverty
and despair. Families live in a world without electricity,
running water, or sanitation. Children run barefoot through
festering heaps of garbage. In these desperate circumstances,
God used a gift-filled shoe box and a five year old girl named
Roseline to help an entire family find eternal hope in Jesus Christ.
Operation
Christmas Child was started in 1990 by Franklin Graham, Evangelist
Billy Graham's son. Last year 8.2 million shoe boxes containing
simple gifts like toothpaste, a small teddy bear, and hard candy
delivered love and the message of Jesus Christ to children in
poverty.
To each box,
Samaritan's Purse adds a story book, "The Greatest Gift of
All," written in the appropriate language. Then volunteers
follow up, inviting children and their families to attend a six-week
Bible study.
As a result,
millions of boys and girls have heard the message of salvation for
the first time, and they responded by committing their lives to Jesus
Christ.
For instance,
in a small church in southeast India, 30 families began attending
church regularly as a result of the Christmas boxes. The pastor said, "Even the
village elders are attending the church now, and the children
themselves are taking part by inviting other children to come to
church."
Shorewood
Foursquare Church is participating in this Samaritan's Purse
project. It is a powerful way to teach children the joy of
giving and the importance of evangelism.
Adults may
pick up boxes and instructions about what and how to pack in the
church/school office and at the back of the sanctuary on
Sundays. All boxes must be returned by Sunday, November
13th for international distribution.
